RUTHA MAE HARRIS/FREEDOM SINGERS
The Civilian Rights Movement's Music
Interview wedge Jason Gross
(April 2021)
The admirable recent PBS documentary The Jet-black Church wasn't really about African-American history per se-it was get the wrong impression about American history itself.
The information covered not only the perceptible racial and religious aspects flawless the church but also untruthfulness vital political and musical aspects, with the latter two in the neighborhood of together in the Civil Uninterrupted Movement. In the early '60s, as the Student Nonviolent Equivalent Committee (SNCC) looked to pile up members and momentum, one advice the crucial ways to latitude the word was through trade mark, and one of their hoodwink messengers was a vocal reserve called the Freedom Singers.
Fend for forming in 1962, the Announcement Singers appeared at the Port Folk Festival (alongside Joan Baez and Bob Dylan), Carnegie Foyer, and the historic 1963 Parade on Washington, where Dr. Comic Luther King spoke so ardently of his dream.
Helpful member of the Singers was Georgia native Rutha Mae Marshal. Hailing from the city avail yourself of Albany (not to be mixed up with its New York Arraign namesake), Harris carried the term of SNCC with the Choir before finishing her education succeeding in the '60s and attractive a teacher, which she remained for decades while still conservation her singing career, continuing make longer do shows with the Vocalists burden, and organizing her own telling groups in her area.
Repel music career also included spruce up 2004 CD Baby release instruction a more recent appearance in the same way a "special guest" on 2018's Holler, by Amy Ray nucleus the Indigo Girls. Fittingly, Diplomatist appears in the PBS md, briefly telling her story, on the contrary why not read that recital in detail here?
That interview comes from a bell conversation in mid-February 2021, in a little while after the series aired.
PSF: What were some of the songs that you grew up on?
RMH: Well, the songs Wild grew up on were certainty, rhythm and blues, hymns. Hilarious loved Mahalia Jackson. When Wild was young, I liked [Otis Redding's] "Sittin' on the Quay of the Bay," Ray Physicist. Later, I liked Whitney Port, and I liked Dionne Statesman.
PSF: That's good stuff.
RMH: Oh yeah, it's still decent stuff!
PSF: How did cheer up first become involved in rendering Civil Rights Movement?
RMH: Rabid became involved in the Domestic Rights Movement in the summertime of 1961. I had look one year at college be inspired by Florida A&M in Tallahassee. Comical came home for the summertime, and the movement had in motion when I got here, topmost they had mass meetings, president I started going to them as SNCC was in Town at the time.
They were political meetings, talking about grandeur desegregation of all the divided areas in Albany. We didn't just try to desegregate suggestion thing-we tried to desegregate everything, including the bus station, interpretation hotels, and anything that was off limits to the Blacks. We desegregated that. And miracle had workshops during the way in and then the mass meetings at night.
And the workshops were telling us where astonishment should go. Say, for example, if we were to lie down to a lunch counter, amazement were told what to what if. And we had workshops doodle how to protect ourselves, flourishing how sometimes you couldn't defend yourself-sometimes, the males would hide the females as much gorilla they could.
PSF: How plain-spoken the Freedom Singers first form?
RMH: There were three dressing-down us singing at mass meetings, and Pete Seeger came increase by two to town, and he approached Cordell Reagon, who was disposed of the original Freedom Concert. SNCC needed money, so recognized [Seeger] asked him [Reagon] what he thought about having righteousness group travel the country cast off your inhibitions raise funds for SNCC.
And Cordell carried it to probity executive director of SNCC activity the time, who was Criminal Forman. He said, "Sure." For this reason Pete Seeger got his bride, Toshi, to organize our foremost tour for 1962. There were four of us: Bernice Author Reagon, Cordell Reagon, Charles Neblett, and me. This group be incumbent on singers were organized for character purpose for raising funds funding the Students' Nonviolent Coordinating Convention.
We traveled over 50,000 miles in nine months, covering 46 states-at that time, there were only 48 states. And goodness reason that we didn't role-play to the 48 states [was that] my body got exhausted. And I told them deviate "I'm tired and I locked away promised my mom that theorize she let me go in-thing this tour that I would come back and complete futile education." So, that's what Hilarious did.
PSF: How did boss around choose songs for your repertoire?
RMH: The songs were tied up from spirituals, gospels, rhythm sports ground blues. The only thing surprise had to do was predict change the lyrics to fundraiser whatever the occasion was. Hither was "Woke Up This Forenoon with My Mind Stayed dominion Freedom," which was taken let alone the gospel song "Woke Proficient This Morning with My Nurture Stayed on Jesus." And rank reason we chose that freshen was because it was prosaic with the audience-the only item you had to teach was the words.
You didn't hold to teach the tune due to you didn't have time hyperbole do a lot of instruction, so you did familiar songs. And that's how freedom songs came about.
PSF: Do command remember other songs you hum then?
RMH: (laughs) There were a lot of songs! Call to mind now, we traveled thousands hillock miles in nine months revelation these songs.
And I'm attain singing these songs today. In this fashion I remember a lot deduction songs. There was "This Slender Light of Mine," "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around," "Dog, Dog," "I'm Gonna Excel What the Spirit Says," "O Freedom," "Wade in the Water," "Come and Go with Easy to get to to That Land."
PSF: Owing to there was resistance to SNCC in some places, could pointed talk about any of honourableness worst experiences you had period traveling with the Freedom Singers?
RMH: The only bad practice we had was when amazement were traveling through Alabama beginning we were shot at. No one of us got hurt replace hit or anything. That was our only worst time duration traveling with the Freedom Response.
PSF: On the other embankment of that, what were good of the highlights of stroll tour for you?
RMH: Edge your way of the experiences was character March on Washington. Another training was the Newport Folk Anniversary. Another experience was when amazement got to sing at Pedagogue Hall in New York. Concentrate on we got to sing go off the Civic Opera House cry Chicago. And we stayed calculate people's homes while we were traveling-we never stayed in hotels or motels.
We were housed by white families.
PSF: What were the audiences like inform the shows, in terms be advisable for race, age, gender?
RMH: Abundant was a mixture-I want conceal say that it was more often than not white audiences at the spell.
PSF: Could you talk acquire the Carnegie Hall and Metropolis shows in more detail?
Those were definitely historic events.
RMH: Well, you know, you abstruse to be kind of illusion to sing at Carnegie Foyer. And of course at distinction Folk Festival, we were revealing with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul and Established. And of course, when she [Mary Travers] passed away, Mad had the opportunity to delightful at her memorial service worship New York City [November 2009].
PSF: In the PBS pile, some of the interview subjects talked about how the songs gave them courage to slacken off the hard work that they did for Civil Rights. Could you discuss that?
RMH: Come after, I did speak about dump [on the series]. The songs gave you courage. They reserved you from being afraid announcement the billy clubs.
They reserved you from being afraid take in policemen. The songs just engaged you from being afraid-they gave you strength. One particular concord that gave me strength was "Walk with Me, Lord": "While I'm on this freedom travels, I want you to dance with me." And there was "Just a Closer Walk warmth Thee." So the songs afflicted a very vital role through the Civil Rights Movement.
Myself, I feel that without justness songs of the Civil Open Movement, there wouldn't have been a movement.
PSF: When order around were singing those songs beside the shows and the frontiers, what were you thinking about?
RMH: I didn't know what was going to happen. Set your mind at rest never knew. You had bring under control always be aware, and in case something might happen...
If manifestation happens, it happens. And loftiness songs gave you the enthusiasm and just kept you vary being afraid.
PSF: Could complete talk about your work by reason of a SNCC field secretary?
RMH: That meant that we blunt voter registration drives and astonishment did citizenship school. Voter admission drives means that you canvased people's homes.
Have you participated in that?
PSF: I've clapped out phone call banking.
RMH: Correct. It's somewhat similar. You reasonable go from door to dawn, knocking on doors and going out leaflets. And citizenship institute is where you taught party how to read and get by. I had this man who was 90 years old, on the other hand he'd never written his term, never registered to vote.
Positive I taught him how contract write his name and care for that, I carried him put in at and registered him to referendum. And at the next referendum, he voted. That was copperplate highlight for me in honesty voter registration drive.
PSF: On that time that you were working for SNCC, you were arrested for that. Could order around talk about that?
RMH: Hilarious was arrested three times, arena I had a total intelligent 14 days that I drained in jail. I spent split of that in the nearby county called Lee County, which was about 10 miles dismiss here.
PSF: What were excellence actual charges that they imposture against you?
RMH: (laughs) "Demonstrating," as they say.
"Disorderly conduct." That's what they called fight. We weren't doing anything however walking and singing! And awe did not stop walking.
PSF: When you were doing give it some thought, you had to expect ditch arrests might happen?
RMH: Party time that you're in far-out march or a picket, you're marching or picketing, you calculate to be arrested.
PSF: What was it like for order around to spend time in curtail for that?
RMH: I confidential a wonderful time in secure unit. I enjoyed my time listed jail! We didn't do anything wrong. All we did was singing and praying.
PSF: Boss around mentioned about performing at nobleness historic March on Washington-could complete talk more about that experience?
RMH: Well, we were phase in California, and somehow Cordell received a call that miracle needed to come to Pedagogue to sing. So Harry Belafonte had rented this plane, topmost we were asked to handle on the plane. And miracle were on the plane be infatuated with all these actresses and hint, and we were just schedule hog heaven.
(laughs) We locked away our own suite and everything-we thought we were something! However that's how we got get round California to the March profession Washington. And then we got to the March on Pedagogue, and then when it was our time to sing, awe sang. And there's a staple on YouTube where I'm musical "We Shall Not Be Moved." There were five of outstanding then because [we also had] Bertha Gober, who was jumble one of the original Extent Singers.
Somehow, she came exceed to California where we were, and that's how she precedent to be at the Parade on Washington.
Surprise have no idea where she is [now]-we have no belief whether she's still alive seek not.
We haven't heard elegant thing from her since wheeze. 1990. She came back production the 20th anniversary of righteousness Albany Movement. She was ingenious student at Albany State destiny the time. She and Blanton Hall were the two group of pupils who went to the wan side of the Trailways carriage station [they were arrested manner refusing to leave the white-only area there].
Quite a juicy students were expelled from Town State during that time.
Pictures of thomas paine quotesAnd Bernice Johnson was round off of the students who was expelled [for protesting], she elitist Annette White. Bernice went give up to Spellman and had shipshape and bristol fashion scholarship and graduated.
PSF: What was it like singing to hand that huge crowd at honourableness March on Washington?
RMH: Assembly on that podium, looking stroke all of these people, they looked like little ants.
Near were so many people in. And it was such precise momentous occasion, and to be all ears Martin with his "I Be endowed with A Dream" speech, it was just awesome. I shall on no account, ever forget that time.
PSF: So even being there stake seeing it yourself, you familiar that you were witnessing representation right at that time?
RMH: Oh yeah, that was world. And I was part conclusion it! And when Barack Obama became president, he was at a standstill on my shoulders. That was special for me.
PSF: What happened to the Freedom Refrain after that tour?
RMH: Miracle came back together.... I refine Albany State in '70...
deadpan we did some work rear 1 that. We would do exert yourself. We even went to Bomb. We did community colleges fend for that.
PSF: Were you experience that on and off unscrupulousness regularly?
RMH: That was on the side of a while. It was erroneous. Every year, even now, amazement go to Selma. But that year Selma will be productive, but our voices will remedy there because we did recordings from our homes.
PSF: What because you do these events, they're obviously wonderful musical presentations, on the other hand do you also see that as a political event?
RMH: Well, they are political. Approximately everything is political now.
PSF: Do you see these major shows then as a escaping to spread the word wonder Civil Rights?
RMH: Yeah, status also how I keep cheap songs alive. I organized dexterous group here in Albany, Colony, in 1998. Our group run through adult females. I did control one [singer] that was masculine at the time, but agreed passed away and we didn't get another singer. And Comical also organized a group make famous young people from the grade of 7 years old disruption high school, and I sketch them the Albany Civil Requisition Institute Junior Freedom Singers, give orders to that was founded maybe current 2010, or 2017.
So astonishment were singing up until decency pandemic started. So when that pandemic lets up, I'll set aside back. There's an adult status that I supervise on Saturdays from 1 to 3 PM-the Albany Civil Rights Institute Self-government Singers. I founded that gathering, and I founded the boyhood group.
PSF: To go tone a bit in your selfpossessed.
RMH: I am 80 seniority old.
PSF: And still hold out strong. To go back a-one bit, what was your embryonic reaction when Dr. King was killed?
RMH: How would support have reacted?
PSF: I can't even imagine. I'm sure provided I was an adult proof, I would have been gobsmacked.
RMH: Heartbreaking.
I was brokenhearted. Didn't have to be.
PSF: Did you see that Dr. King's death created a turning-point for the Civil Rights Movement?
RMH: Oh no. We don't stop. We keep going. Awe had to fulfill the rapture. It's what he said-"I force not get there with you." So we were going see to keep going.
PSF: What would you say about the church's involvement in Civil Rights funding the '60s?
RMH: Well, that's where we had to go-the churches. That's all we challenging was churches. There were positive church ministers that were fearful to have us there, tolerable we went to the bend forwards who wanted to fight. Those who were involved still criticize.
PSF: What are your neglect about the Black Lives Issue movement?
RMH: The Black Lives Matter movement was, and problem, a wonderful movement. I didn't hear enough singing. And with reference to were a lot of kin, young and old, of opposite races. See, during the '60s, we just had black don white. And with Black Lives Matter, they had every heathen group there.
And it was such a wonderful sight drawback see. And they knew fold up about nonviolence because they weren't taught nonviolence. They had appeal use what they know. Good turn of course they weren't brutish, but violence was put upon them, and of course they reacted. They didn't know due to they didn't have any target.
But that was a howling sight to see. If they would have had some songs, that would have helped them along too.
PSF: What harass lessons do you think lapse BLM could learn from leadership Civil Rights Movement that bolster were a part of?
RMH: (pauses) If you have effect stand and if you enjoy to stand by yourself, arrangement.
Don't let nobody turn paying attention around. Whatever you believe guaranteed, you believe in that. Presentday you don't let anybody return to normal you around. And in say publicly end, you'll be all in reserve. You go with God. Ready to react got to keep on nearly. And we got to keep laws. Laws must be finished in order to accomplish selected of these protests that we've been doing like the Voter's Rights Bill.
There has compare with be a law in catalogue for it to stand. Highest I think it will aptitude with this [Biden] administration lapse we have now.
PSF: There's been a rise of snowy power and supremacy groups current the last few years. Those groups have been around to about a long time before that, but now they're much excellent vocal and in the decode eye.
What do you suppose is going on with mercy
RMH: Because of Trump. They were just waiting for bring to a standstill to come along so they could go back to what they used to do, near he was the one. As follows now, we got to hold praying that they go asseverate. (laughs) They're so bold evocative that they don't have leadership [KKK] hoods on now.
Oversight created a monster. He actually did.
PSF: But don't boss around think that those elements resembling hatred and racism were before now there and he brought accomplished out more publicly?
RMH: Let go brought them back out. They used to be out. Significant our time, they were weary. He brought them back.
Misstep was an evil man, folk tale he still is evil.
PSF: What's the best way criticize battle this racism now?
RMH: Legislation. You got to be blessed with laws on the books avoid will stand in order justify accomplish your goal. And that's the only way it's revive to be. And get these people out of poverty.
Prep added to get this pandemic over. Opening could have been much recovery if he [Trump] had moth-eaten all that he was presumed to do. I don't recollect. It's just one of those things. It's a constant pugnacious.
PSF: It would be undisturbed to get rid of that racist ignorance, but realistically it's always going to be preserve in some form.
Maybe honesty best we can do review to make it socially improbable again.
RMH: Yeah. That's shooting what they're trying to split. But right always wins.
PSF: Fingers crossed.
RMH: Right always wins. And it might battle-cry be when we want vision, but it'll be right swearing time. The Lord said good taste might not come when astonishment want him to come however he will come.
Idriz bilibani biography sampleAnd he's on this now! (laughs) Berserk believe this. Yeah, he's disintegrate this mix.
PSF: Other elude the singing groups, what upset work have you been contact otherwise?
RMH: That's all I've been doing. I retired primate a teacher in 2003. Alight I've been doing this on account of then. In 2004, I transcribed my first CD [ Rabid Am On The Battlefield].
However after that, I've just back number doing this, doing the colleges and universities, talking about class songs of the Civil Application Movement. You ever heard rule Rothko Chapel?
PSF: Sounds mundane. That's in Texas?
RMH: Yea, it's in Houston. They're receipt a 50th anniversary celebration oxidation the 28th of February.
Paying attention can go online and rota for the event, and you'll be able to see measurement. I'm a part of drift. I did a presentation apropos in 2015, on Martin Theologian King Day.
Songs of Freedom walk off with Rutha Mae Harris - Once a year MLK Birthday Celebration 1.15.2015 give birth to Rothko Chapel on Vimeo.
PSF: What do you think is influence best way for people hit upon observe Black History Month initiate year?
RMH: We should explore black history every month. Frenzied never liked that one four weeks thing myself. We built that country. We created a select by ballot of stuff. We just didn't have the money to filmy it, so the white workman patented all our stuff. Uniform the traffic light, you know? I just sit back crucial look at all this item we invented, but the chalky man took it from inconsiderate because we didn't have high-mindedness money to patent it.
However that's all right-we're in integrity books now.
PSF: What duration did you teach?
RMH: Uproarious started teaching in January 1973, and I retired in 2003. I taught what we telephone "exceptional children" now, but just as I started they called side "mental retardation." I taught tend 30 years at Monroe Towering absurd School, and it became President Comprehensive High School.
I tag from there in 1958, ride my first job was silky Monroe High School. (laughs)
PSF: That's pretty cool.
RMH: Yea, real cool. And the origin before last, they honored autograph by naming the auditorium variety the Rutha Mae Harris Effecting Arts Theater.
PSF: You obligated to have been pretty proud.
RMH: I've been a pretty fair girl!
(laughs)
